Some time around February 1984, a group of men organized a work detail to help get the newly build, our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church, ready for the March 25th grand opening. “Cap” David was the driving force behind this group of dedicated men.
The parking areas had no concrete yet and consisted of wet red clay. Not wanting to get the clay inside the new Church, boards were laid throughout the parking area, forming walkways. All the pews were hauled into the Church, by had, using these walkways. Most of the work was done on weekends, since many of the men worked during the week at regular jobs.
After the Church dedication, these men continued to work on the Church grounds, installing a watering system in the Prayer Garden, among other things. This dedicated group of men decided to meet on Tuesday mornings, as that seemed to be the day that ore of the men, retirees and shift workers could be in attendance. Their work was mostly done in the Prayer Garden and the fruits of their labor can be admired and enjoyed to this day. That is also how they got the name “Garden Angels.”
Some of the men who were inst4rumental in keeping the Garden Angels going were: Babe Keever, Ken Vincent, Cap Dean, O’Neal Breaux and Dudley Manuel. Over the years, many have come and gone, but the Ministry is very much alive and well.
The Garden Angels meet on Tuesday mornings at the Rectory from 7:00 am until around 9:00 am, mainly for the satisfaction of keeping our Church and grounds clean, attractive and running smoothly. They do everything from replacing light bulbs in the very top of the Church to repairing water leaks. Once they have completed their duties, they all get together for some food and fellowship in the Rectory kitchen with coffee, sausage and biscuits.
